Matchbox Consulting is seeking a Controller for our client, a well-established design-build General Contractor and Construction Manager. With over 50 years of industry experience, our client has completed over 2000 projects in commercial, institutional, education, government, healthcare to name a few.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as strategic finance, H/R and corporate risk advisor to the President for operating and holding companies.
- Plan, direct and coordinate all accounting operational functions.
- Oversee one employee.
- Oversee the annual budgeting process.
- Review financial data for analysis and forecasting with respect to profits, trends, costs, and compliance.
- Execute and manage the accounting department functions.
- Work closely with VP Construction on project performance and controls.
- Ensure that all financial accounting duties and public and internal reporting (month-end, quarter-end, and year-end) are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Manage and ensure compliance with all federal and provincial regulatory requirements regarding Workers' Compensation, PST, GST, Payroll remittance, and Health and Income taxes. Ensure the timely distribution of monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements to shareholders and third-party business partners.
- Manage tax planning, annual tax provision and returns, and work with tax advisors to drive best practice documentation.
- Oversee business operations which include setting up accounting and reporting systems, implementing internal controls and systems procedures, payables/receivables, payroll, processes, and policies.
- Manage and review IT systems, assess, and recommend improvements to the current system to take advantage of improved technologies. Manage all stages of the role out of any new IT program, including the planning, implementation, testing and reporting systems, together with implementation of internal controls processes, and policies.
- Respond to daily enquiries from internal or external parties with respect to corporate accounting records.
- Develop and maintain strong relations with third party business partners, banker, insurance and bonding brokers.
- Oversee and ensure adequate insurance is in place to manage corporate, project specific and contractual insurance requirements
Qualifications:
- CPA designation, with at least 10+ years of progressive financial reporting experience.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to identify both the risks and reward with any opportunity.
- Strong technical skills in accounting, tax planning, information technologies, contract management, human resources and labor standards.
- Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to meet tight deadlines.
- Knowledge of Construction Project Accounting or similar experience.
