The ideal candidate will have experience estimating electrical systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional (ICI) construction projects. You will play a key role in ensuring the accurate and efficient estimation of electrical costs for projects, collaborating closely with other estimators, project managers, and subcontractors to deliver high-quality bids and cost estimates.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Electrical Cost Estimating:
- Develop accurate and detailed cost estimates for electrical systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
- Review electrical specifications, drawings, and other project documentation to produce comprehensive electrical estimates.
- Identify and account for electrical-specific project requirements, such as power distribution, lighting, wiring, and specialized systems.
- Prepare detailed breakdowns for bids and ensure alignment with project scopes and timelines.
-
Bid Preparation and Tendering:
- Lead the preparation and submission of electrical tenders, proposals, and cost estimates in response to RFPs (Requests for Proposals).
- Coordinate with the procurement team to evaluate subcontractor and supplier bids, ensuring competitive pricing and quality of work.
- Assess and select subcontractors for electrical work, negotiate terms, and manage relationships with suppliers and subcontractors.
-
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with other estimators, project managers, and engineers to ensure that all electrical estimates align with the broader project budgets and timelines.
- Communicate with clients and internal teams regarding changes to the electrical scope of work, pricing adjustments, and potential cost-saving opportunities.
- Provide technical guidance and advice to clients and internal teams on electrical cost and design considerations.
-
Project Budgeting and Cost Control:
- Assist project managers in monitoring and controlling electrical project budgets, ensuring that projects remain within financial and time constraints.
- Help identify areas of cost-saving and provide value-engineering options without compromising the quality or safety of the electrical systems.
- Prepare periodic cost updates and assist with forecasting for electrical components throughout the life of the project.
-
Market and Industry Research:
- Stay informed on industry trends, market conditions, and new technologies related to electrical systems to ensure competitive and accurate estimates.
- Track pricing for electrical materials, equipment, and labor costs to provide accurate, up-to-date estimates.
-
Risk Management:
- Identify and mitigate risks associated with electrical systems, such as potential design issues or material shortages, and provide recommendations to address those risks.
- Ensure compliance with local building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards in all estimates and project scopes.
Qualifications:
-
Education:
- A degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related field.
- Certification in electrical estimating or construction management is preferred (e.g., AACE, CEA).
-
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as an electrical estimator with a general contractor or electrical contracting firm.
- Proven experience estimating electrical systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional projects.
- Familiarity with electrical estimating software (e.g., Accubid, Bluebeam, or equivalent).
- Knowledge of local electrical codes, regulations, and industry standards (e.g., BC Electrical Code).
-
Skills:
- Strong technical knowledge of electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, fire alarms, and other specialized electrical systems.
- Exceptional organizational and time-management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly present estimates and collaborate with internal teams and clients.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality, accurate work.
