Senior Electrical Engineer – EMT & Substation Design

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with expertise in Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) studies and high-voltage substation systems to support key analytical and design work. This is a part-time, remote opportunity (approximately 2 days per week) contributing to major capital and sustainment projects within a large utility environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct EMT studies including transformer energization, motor starting, harmonics analysis, and interconnection assessments
• Model renewable energy inverter-based resources (BESS, wind, solar) in PSCAD
• Simulate substation components such as transformers, breakers, VFDs, and transmission lines
• Deliver signed and sealed engineering packages as a Professional of Record
• Provide technical input for substation layouts, grounding, and equipment specifications (12kV to 500kV)
• Support project teams with field reviews, design coordination, and documentation

Required Qualifications

• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Canada (EGBC preferred or eligible)
• Must hold or be eligible to obtain a Permit to Practice through EGBC (individual or firm-based)
• Minimum 10 years of experience in power systems, substation engineering, or utility design
• Proficient in PSCAD; familiarity with EMTP-RV and ASPEN OneLiner is an asset
• Strong knowledge of high-voltage electrical equipment and utility design standards
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s or higher is a plus)
• Ability to provide sealed deliverables in accordance with professional practice requirements

Nice to Have

• Experience with renewable integration, IPP interconnections, and transmission planning
• Familiarity with CSA, IEEE, and IEC standards
• Effective communicator with strong technical writing and report development skills
• Previous field experience with engineering reviews or construction support

Additional Information

• This is a security-sensitive position
• You must have or obtain professional liability insurance
• Digital sealing capability (e.g., Notarius) may be required
• All work must comply with EGBC professional and quality standards
