Matchbox Consulting Group is joining hands with a reputable and growing commercial contractor in Edmonton, Alberta, in search for an Intermediate or Senior Estimator to join their team to support bidding and pre-construction across diverse Alberta projects.
Key Responsibilities
-
Review architectural and structural drawings, specifications, addenda, and other tender documents to identify scope, risks, and cost items.
-
Prepare detailed quantity take-offs, material cost estimates, labour cost estimates, subcontractor pricing, equipment and overhead allowances.
-
Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and trade partners to validate assumptions and clarify scope.
-
Identify potential cost-saving opportunities and value-engineering alternatives.
-
Prepare bid submission packages, including cost summaries, breakdowns, bid narratives and risk registers.
-
Maintain and update historical cost databases and unit-rate templates for future estimating.
-
Participate in bid reviews and lessons-learned sessions to continuously improve estimating accuracy.
-
Assist in early project budgeting and support pre-contract negotiations when required.
-
Ensure estimating work aligns with company policies, quality standards and safety requirements.
Ideal Candidate – Skills & Qualifications
-
3+ years of commercial construction estimating experience (with a general contractor or subcontractor) — ideally in tenant improvements, retail/office, medical or light industrial projects.
-
Proficiency in take-off software (e.g., Bluebeam, On-Screen Take-Off), estimating spreadsheets and cost databases.
-
Solid understanding of building construction methods, materials, labour rates, trade scopes, general conditions, and provincial codes/regulations (Alberta).
-
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail; ability to interpret drawings and specs and convert them into accurate costs.
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills — able to present estimates and assumptions clearly and collaborate across teams.
-
Comfortable working to bid deadlines and managing multiple simultaneous opportunities.
-
Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
-
Familiarity with commercial GC project delivery models (TI/tenant improvements, maintenance, building envelope, retail/office build-outs) is an asset.
What’s Important to Us
-
Safety first: we believe every employee and trade partner should go home safe each day.
-
Treating our team and trade partners like family — reliable, respectful relationships are core to our culture.
-
Quality workmanship and materials: we stand by delivering exceptional outcomes for our clients.
-
Excellent communication and teamwork: strong relationships drive strong results.
-
A company with projects across Alberta but committed to local communities and a well-supported team environment.
Your Fit & Personality
-
You are methodical, process-driven and proud of your accuracy in estimating.
-
You like working in a collaborative environment — you know that success comes from team effort, good relationships and clear communication.
-
You thrive in a detail-oriented role but also understand the bigger picture (schedule, risk, margin, client satisfaction).
-
You value doing things right, working hard and being part of something meaningful — not just another bid.
-
You are comfortable working in a dynamic construction environment where change happens, and you adapt quickly.
