MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Telecom Engineer to work on a 1 year contract with renewal potential for our client, one of BC's largest utility and clean energy companies.

This hybrid role is based in Burnaby, BC and offers the opportunity to play a key role in shaping the next generation of a province-wide telecommunications network supporting critical utility infrastructure.

As an Intermediate Engineer within the Telecom Engineering team, you will work on high-performance transport systems and critical connectivity solutions that support utility operations, SCADA, grid protection, and cybersecurity initiatives across British Columbia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the design of telecom networks and circuits, ensuring reliability, performance, and security for real-time grid operations and future utility technologies.

  • Support drawings, material ordering, and material management for telecom infrastructure construction, including:

    • Microwave radio links

    • Fiber optic networks (DWDM/OTN)

    • WiMAX radio networks

    • Satellite communications

    • Power Line Carrier links

    • LTE

    • Leased facilities

    • IP/MPLS networks

    • Digital cross-connect switches

    • SONET multiplexers

    • Tetra/VHF/UHF mobile radio systems

    • Teleprotection systems

    • -48 VDC power systems and grounding

  • Partner closely with Project Managers and construction teams to meet safety, cost, and milestone objectives.

  • Resolve complex field issues and provide technical leadership during installation, testing, and commissioning.

  • Ensure all engineering work complies with EGBC requirements, client standards, and industry best practices, reinforcing a culture of technical integrity and professional accountability.

  • Participate in site visits and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to confirm design intent, support field implementation, and contribute to maintenance and emergency restoration activities when critical telecom systems are impacted.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or a closely related discipline) from a recognized post-secondary institution.

  • Minimum of 2 years of progressive engineering experience in the design and engineering of telecommunications systems.

  • Experience working within a power utility telecom department (highly preferred).

  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking.

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing (required for site visits and field support).

Technical Experience

Experience with one or more of the following:

  • Telecom technologies such as microwave radio, fiber optic networks, WiMAX, satellite communications, Power Line Carrier, LTE, leased facilities, digital cross-connect switches, SONET, Tetra/VHF/UHF radio, teleprotection, and -48V DC systems.

  • TDM (SONET/PDH) and IP/MPLS circuits, including circuits carrying teleprotection and RAS.

  • IP/MPLS architecture and design, including IPv4/IPv6, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS/VPN, EVPN, Segment Routing, QoS, Traffic Engineering, and security across large-scale LAN/WAN environments.

  • Configuring and deploying Nokia IP/MPLS platforms, including L2/L3VPN and QoS technologies.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with Nokia MPLS or Cisco devices.

Additional Strengths

  • Demonstrated excellence in technical writing and verbal communication.

  • Ability to work independently, take initiative on complex technical challenges, and seek guidance when appropriate.

  • Solid understanding of project management processes, contract management, and construction oversight.
