MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Market Design Analyst to join a leading electricity market organization responsible for shaping the future of Alberta’s power market. This role will support the design, evaluation, and implementation of market reforms and strategic initiatives that promote reliability, affordability, and long-term sustainability within Alberta’s electricity sector.

The successful candidate will combine strong analytical capabilities with a solid understanding of electricity markets, market economics, policy development, and stakeholder engagement. Working closely with internal experts, industry participants, regulators, and government stakeholders, this individual will play a key role in developing and advancing market design solutions that support the evolving energy landscape.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support the development of electricity market design initiatives and policy recommendations.
• Evaluate market design alternatives by assessing economic efficiency, operational impacts, stakeholder implications, and implementation considerations.
• Conduct research and analysis on electricity market structures, regulatory frameworks, and industry best practices across North America and other jurisdictions.
• Collaborate with internal subject matter experts to identify, develop, and implement market changes and enhancements.
• Engage with external stakeholders, including industry participants, regulatory bodies, government agencies, and market participants.
• Prepare technical reports, briefing materials, presentations, discussion papers, and recommendations for leadership and stakeholders.
• Communicate complex market design concepts and policy implications to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Support cross-functional initiatives to ensure alignment between market design programs and broader organizational priorities.
• Provide technical expertise and analytical support for market development and strategic planning activities.
• Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, regulatory developments, and market evolution to identify opportunities and risks.

Qualifications – Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Engineering, Business, Finance, Energy Systems, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of experience within electricity markets, energy markets, utilities, regulatory environments, or market design functions.
• Strong understanding of competitive electricity markets and market economics.
• Experience conducting economic, technical, regulatory, or policy analysis.
• Knowledge of electric utility regulations, market frameworks, and compliance requirements.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with technical experts, stakeholders, regulators, and industry participants.
• Strong business acumen and ability to assess market risks and opportunities.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Preferred

• Master’s degree in Economics, Engineering, Business Administration, Public Policy, Energy Systems, or a related discipline.
• Direct experience with electricity market design, market development, or market reform initiatives.
• Experience working with utilities, system operators, regulatory agencies, government organizations, or energy market participants.
• Knowledge of Alberta’s electricity market structure and the Restructured Energy Market (REM).
• Experience engaging with external stakeholders and facilitating discussions among diverse interest groups.
• Experience preparing executive-level presentations, reports, and strategic recommendations.
• Strong understanding of energy policy, market evolution, and emerging industry trends.
