Distribution Planning Engineer

Location: Burnaby, BC (Hybrid) or Remote (Must Work PST Hours)
Duration: 12-Month Contract

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking an experienced Distribution Planning Engineer to support one of British Columbia's largest utility providers. This opportunity is ideal for a Professional Engineer with strong expertise in electrical distribution planning, distributed energy resources (DER), and generator interconnection studies.

The successful candidate will contribute to the planning, analysis, and optimization of electrical distribution systems while supporting grid modernization and the integration of distributed generation technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and evaluate electrical distribution system performance and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Conduct technical and economic planning studies to support short- and long-term distribution system requirements.

  • Prepare distribution system load forecasts and support system planning initiatives.

  • Perform engineering studies to support distributed generation interconnections and system expansion.

  • Contribute to the development of automation and protection schemes to improve system reliability, efficiency, and performance.

  • Support asset management strategies for distribution infrastructure.

  • Investigate and resolve complex engineering issues using sound engineering judgment.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop practical engineering solutions.

  • Prepare technical documentation, engineering reports, and regulatory support materials.

  • Support planning activities related to system reliability, risk management, and future network growth.

Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC.

  • Permit to Practice (or access to a firm's Permit to Practice).

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant electrical engineering experience.

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized Canadian university or equivalent.

  • Strong experience with overhead and underground electrical distribution systems operating at 35 kV or below.

  • Experience performing distributed generation interconnection studies.

  • Familiarity with generator interconnection standards, including CSA C22.3 No. 9 and IEEE 1547.

  • Strong understanding of distributed energy resources, inverter technologies, and standards such as UL 1741.

  • Excellent technical writing, communication, analytical, and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using CYME, EMTP, or other electrical power system analysis software.

  • Experience developing automation and protection schemes.

  • Knowledge of asset management and distribution planning methodologies.

  • Experience working within the utility industry.

  • Knowledge of regulatory submissions and technical documentation.
