MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Surface Land Agent on behalf of our client, an established land services organization supporting the energy and natural resources sectors across Western Canada.

This role is ideal for a motivated Land Agent who can independently manage surface land acquisition, landowner negotiations, stakeholder relationships, regulatory requirements, and project coordination. The position will be based in Calgary or Lloydminster, with regular travel to project locations. Edmonton-based candidates may also be considered.

The successful candidate will have strong oil & gas land experience, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build genuine relationships with landowners, including farmers and agricultural stakeholders. While the team is open on overall years of experience, approximately 5–10 years is the preferred range for someone who can step in and contribute with limited supervision.

• Work Arrangement: In-office, 5 days/week with regular project travel

Responsibilities

• Manage surface land acquisition files from initial planning through completion.
• Identify and secure land rights required for energy and infrastructure projects.
• Negotiate surface leases, rights-of-way, access agreements, and other land agreements with landowners.
• Act as a primary point of contact for landowners and stakeholders throughout assigned projects.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with landowners, farmers, clients, regulators, and other stakeholders.
• Address landowner concerns and work toward practical, mutually acceptable solutions.
• Obtain required regulatory approvals and ensure land activities meet applicable requirements.
• Maintain accurate land records, agreements, correspondence, and project documentation.
• Support project planning by identifying potential land-related risks, constraints, and opportunities.
• Coordinate with clients and internal project teams to support timely project execution.
• Travel regularly to project locations, including work in the Lloydminster area.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to land analysts as required.
• Represent the organization professionally during negotiations, stakeholder meetings, and field activities.

Qualifications – Must-Haves

• Experience in surface land acquisition and negotiations, preferably within oil & gas or the broader energy sector.
• Strong understanding of surface leases, rights-of-way, access agreements, and land acquisition processes.
• Experience working directly with landowners and other external stakeholders.
• Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
• High level of initiative, accountability, and self-motivation.
• Ability to independently manage files and priorities with limited supervision.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Valid driver's licence with a clean driver's abstract.
• Ability to travel regularly for project work.

Nice-to-Haves

• Valid Alberta Land Agent Licence in good standing.
• Approximately 5–10 years of relevant land experience.
• Diploma in Surface Land Management or a related discipline.
• Strong oil & gas land experience.
• Previous experience working with agricultural landowners and rural communities.
• Agriculture or farming background.
• Experience supporting energy, utility, infrastructure, renewable energy, or natural resource projects.
• Experience mentoring or providing guidance to land analysts.
• Interest in developing experience across both surface and mineral land.
