About the Opportunity

Our client is a well-established utility contractor with a growing presence across Western Canada. Due to continued business growth and expansion into new markets, they are looking to add an experienced Civil Estimator with strong Water & Sewer / Deep Utilities experience to their Edmonton team.

This is a strategic hire. Our client is specifically looking to expand its capabilities in water, sewer and municipal civil infrastructure, and requires an estimator who can bring proven expertise in this area.

This is not a general Civil Estimator position. The successful candidate must have the technical and estimating experience to independently develop competitive bids for water and sewer projects from tender documents through submission.

The Role

Reporting to the Lead Estimator, you will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for civil and deep utility projects across Alberta and Saskatchewan.

You will take ownership of bids from initial tender review through final submission, working closely with operations, suppliers, subcontractors and internal leadership to develop realistic and commercially sound estimates.

Key responsibilities include:

• Independently prepare estimates from initial tender review through submission
• Estimate water main, sanitary sewer and stormwater infrastructure projects
• Complete detailed quantity takeoffs from drawings, specifications and tender documents
• Develop labour, equipment, material and subcontractor pricing
• Obtain, evaluate and incorporate supplier and subcontractor quotations
• Review contract documents, drawings and specifications for scope requirements
• Identify scope gaps, risks, exclusions and potential opportunities
• Develop competitive pricing for hard-bid and unit-price tenders
• Assess construction methodology, sequencing and constructability when developing estimates
• Collaborate with project and operations teams to validate production rates and project assumptions
• Prepare complete and accurate tender submissions
• Maintain organized estimating documentation and bid records
• Support the continued development of the company’s water and sewer estimating capabilities

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will have a background with a civil, deep utilities or infrastructure contractor and demonstrated experience independently estimating water and sewer work.

You will bring:

• 6+ years of progressive civil estimating experience
• Direct water and sewer estimating experience
• Experience estimating municipal and/or deep utility construction
• Proven ability to independently manage an estimate and own a bid
• Strong hard-bid / competitive tender experience
• Experience with unit-price contracts
• Strong understanding of quantity takeoffs and production-based pricing
• Experience pricing labour, equipment and materials
• Experience managing supplier and subcontractor quotations
• Ability to interpret drawings, specifications and tender documents
• Understanding of excavation, earthworks and underground utility construction
• Strong attention to detail and commercial awareness
• Ability to work independently and take initiative

Relevant Project Experience

Experience with the following types of projects will be particularly relevant:

• Water main installation and replacement
• Sanitary sewer installation and replacement
• Stormwater infrastructure
• Municipal servicing
• New development servicing
• Underground utility installation
• Deep utility infrastructure
• Excavation and earthworks
• Civil infrastructure and municipal improvements

Software

Experience with B2W and/or Accubid is an asset.

Our client places greater importance on demonstrated water/sewer estimating capability than on an exact software match, and candidates with strong relevant estimating experience using other platforms will be considered.

What This Opportunity Offers

This position provides the opportunity to join a growing utilities business and play a meaningful role in expanding its water and sewer capabilities.

The broader business works across a diverse range of utility and infrastructure projects, from smaller projects valued around $250K through to multimillion-dollar infrastructure opportunities, including major utility, LRT, data centre and renewable energy work.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of a growing market segment while working within an established estimating team.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation will be based on experience and estimator level, with an approximate range of $105,000–$150,000.

Additional package includes:

• 3 weeks vacation to start

• Vehicle allowance of approximately $500–$800/month depending on level and requirements

Location

This is an Edmonton-based, office-oriented position.

Our client is relocating its Edmonton office to Acheson, AB before Christmas, and the successful candidate must be able and willing to work from the Edmonton/Acheson office.

Relocation candidates may be considered for the right opportunity.

Requirements

• Valid driver’s licence
• Satisfactory driver’s abstract
• Relevant civil estimating experience
• Proven water/sewer estimating background
• Ability to work from the Edmonton/Acheson office
• Strong communication and organizational skills
