MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer – Diesel Generation to support one of British Columbia’s largest utility providers. This role will support a growing mechanical workload across capital projects, operations and maintenance programs, and Owner’s Engineer review activities.

The successful candidate will bring hands-on experience with diesel generating station mechanical systems and provide preliminary design, costing, inspection, and troubleshooting support. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineer who combines strong technical judgment with the ability to work independently and collaborate closely with operations teams, suppliers, contractors, and consultants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide preliminary design, costing, inspection, and troubleshooting support for mechanical systems at diesel generating stations.
  • Support diesel gensets ranging from 50 kW to 2.8 MW.
  • Work with diesel engine auxiliary systems including starting, air intake, exhaust, cooling, and lubrication systems.
  • Support diesel fuel storage and transfer systems, including tanks, pumps, filters, valves, piping, and spill containment.
  • Provide engineering support for HVAC and fire protection systems associated with powerhouses and equipment enclosures.
  • Support cranes, hoists, and other lifting equipment.
  • Contribute to capital projects, operations and maintenance programs, and Owner’s Engineer reviews.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot mechanical equipment and technical issues and recommend practical engineering solutions.
  • Coordinate extensively with operations staff, suppliers, contractors, consultants, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Develop safe engineering solutions and support project delivery objectives related to safety, cost, quality, and schedule.

Must Have

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant engineering experience or equivalent.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with Engineers and Geoscientists BC, or registered in another jurisdiction and eligible for registration in BC.
  • Experience with preliminary design, costing, inspection, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems for diesel generating stations in an electric utility environment.
  • Experience supporting diesel generation mechanical systems, including gensets, engine auxiliaries, fuel storage and transfer systems, HVAC, fire protection, and lifting equipment.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with operations staff, suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
  • Self-starter who can work independently, establish priorities, and perform effectively with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to proactively identify technical issues, opportunities, and required actions.
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous environments and apply sound engineering judgment.
  • Access to a valid EGBC Permit to Practice through their own sole practitioner registration or firm.

Nice to Have

  • Additional experience with diesel generation systems and associated infrastructure.
  • Experience with costing, inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance of power generation assets.
  • AutoCAD experience for conceptual layouts and preliminary drafting.
  • Experience using Microsoft Copilot or other AI-enabled productivity tools in a professional environment.
  • Familiarity with CAD systems, drawing standards, and industry-standard engineering design and analysis software.

This opportunity is particularly well suited to a hands-on mechanical engineer with diesel generation or power generation experience who enjoys solving equipment problems, supporting field and operations teams, and contributing across both capital projects and ongoing asset programs.
