MatchBox Consulting Group is partnering with an established civil contractor seeking an experienced estimator to lead its estimating function and help drive its next stage of growth.

With more than 30 years in the market, a small, experienced team and larger projects entering the pipeline, this contractor offers the opportunity to take ownership and make a measurable commercial impact. You will work directly with the VP and President, influence which projects the company pursues and help turn strong bids into profitable work.

Projects typically range from $250K to $10M+, covering piling, bulk earth excavation, underground utilities and ground improvement. Experience estimating piling and bulk excavation is essential.

The Role

As the company’s main estimator, you will prepare accurate, competitive bids that protect margin and set the field team up for successful delivery.

You will bring a practical understanding of crews, equipment, production rates, access, sequencing and ground conditions. Your judgment will help the company choose the right opportunities, price risk appropriately and win work it can execute profitably.

What You’ll Do

• Lead estimates from tender review through final submission.

• Complete takeoffs and pricing for piling, bulk excavation, underground utilities and ground improvement.

• Build labour, equipment, material and subcontractor costs around realistic production rates and construction methods.

• Review drawings, specifications and tender requirements to identify scope gaps, risks and constructability issues.

• Work with ownership and field teams to assess sequencing, access and execution plans.

• Obtain, compare and clarify supplier and subcontractor quotations.

• Recommend bid strategies that balance competitiveness, risk and profitability.

• Lead the team through tender priorities and submission deadlines.

• Track upcoming opportunities through BuildConnect and other sources.

• Maintain historical pricing, strengthen estimating processes and support clear handovers to operations.

What You Bring

• Proven civil estimating experience, with the ability to manage bids independently.

• Strong estimating experience in piling and bulk earth excavation.

• A practical understanding of civil construction methods, crews, equipment and production rates.

• Strong takeoff skills and confidence interpreting drawings, specifications and bid documents.

• Commercial judgment and an understanding of how estimating decisions affect project margins.

• The confidence to lead the estimating process, challenge assumptions and work directly with ownership.

• Experience with Bluebeam, Agtek, Timberline or comparable software.

• An organized, accountable approach to competing tenders and deadlines.
