Controller

MatchBox Consulting Group is working with a privately owned group of companies to recruit a Controller based in the Vancouver area.

This opportunity is well suited to a CPA currently working in public practice who is interested in transitioning into industry while continuing to apply strong tax, financial reporting, and advisory expertise.

The Controller will oversee accounting operations for the Vancouver entities while working closely with ownership on tax planning, financial structuring, and strategic financial matters across the broader group of companies.

The Business

The ownership group operates a diverse portfolio of companies and assets across Western Canada, including:

• An established construction company (~$80M revenue)

• Commercial real estate and land holdings

• Office buildings and operating companies

• Multiple related holding and investment entities

In total, the structure includes approximately ten interconnected companies managed under common ownership.

The finance function supports both the operating businesses and the broader ownership structure.

The Opportunity

The Controller will oversee the accounting function in Vancouver and work closely with the President and Chief Financial Officer, who are based in Edmonton.

A significant portion of the role will involve working directly with ownership on tax planning, corporate structuring, and financial strategy across the group. The position sits at the intersection of operating companies and the owner’s private holdings, providing exposure to a wide range of financial and tax considerations.

The current CFO is expected to retire within the next few years. While the responsibilities of this role are distinct from the CFO position, the role offers strong long-term growth potential for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee accounting operations for Vancouver-based entities

• Coordinate financial reporting across operating and holding companies

• Manage budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis

• Support ownership with tax planning and corporate structuring initiatives

• Coordinate with external tax advisors and ensure appropriate documentation

• Ensure compliance with federal and provincial regulatory requirements (GST, PST, payroll, etc.)

• Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial reporting

• Work closely with operational leadership on project and business performance

• Maintain relationships with external partners including bankers, insurers, and advisors

• Assist with the implementation and improvement of accounting systems and internal controls

• Support broader financial planning initiatives across the group

Qualifications

• CPA designation

• Public practice experience is required

• Approximately 10+ years of progressive accounting experience

• Strong technical background in tax planning, financial reporting, and corporate structures

• Experience advising owner-managed businesses is highly valued

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

• Ability to manage multiple entities and competing priorities

• Comfortable working closely with ownership and external advisors
