Controller

Vancouver, BC | Full-time, permanent

MatchBox Consulting Group is exclusively partnering with a growing Vancouver-based engineering and development consultancy to find its next Controller.

This is a chance to take ownership of the finance function at a hands-on, pivotal stage of growth. The company has about 30 employees and plans to grow to 42–50 over the next 6–12 months. Its core business generates roughly $6–8 million in annual revenue, with plans to exceed $10 million next year.

Reporting to the Executive Managing Partner, you’ll work directly with leadership and become the most senior finance professional in the business. You’ll help strengthen financial reporting and controls, guide decisions with clear analysis, and shape how the finance function develops as the company grows.

The role

This is a hands-on Controller position with both operational and planning responsibilities. You’ll own the accounting cycle and monthly reporting while helping leadership with budgeting, project performance, cash flow and financial planning.

The business works through multiple Canadian subsidiaries and related international entities. You’ll help maintain accurate, useful financial information across that network and build a clear understanding of how its different parts work together. The role begins with an outsourced bookkeeping resource, with potential to bring more work in-house and build out the finance function over time.

What you’ll do

  • Own full-cycle accounting, including month-end and year-end close, reconciliations and financial statement preparation.

  • Prepare monthly management reports, budgets, forecasts and variance analysis.

  • Oversee project accounting, including WIP, revenue recognition, unbilled and deferred revenue, labour and project costs, billing, contract values and margins.

  • Manage multi-entity consolidations, intercompany transactions and foreign exchange.

  • Maintain strong financial controls and improve processes as the business grows.

  • Coordinate year-end audit and tax requirements with the external accounting firm.

  • Oversee the outsourced bookkeeping relationship and ensure the underlying records are accurate and complete.

  • Work with project and technical teams to explain financial results and help them understand the value and performance of their work.

  • Support leadership with cash flow, financing, capital allocation and other business decisions.

  • Identify opportunities to bring more accounting work in-house and develop the finance function as the company expands.

What you bring

  • CPA designation is required.

  • You are already based in Metro Vancouver.

  • You have in-house accounting or controllership experience in an AEC environment—architecture, engineering or construction. Experience in a technical professional-services firm is especially relevant.

  • You’ve managed hands-on accounting responsibilities while contributing to budgeting, reporting and business planning.

  • You’re comfortable with project accounting and can connect project activity to financial results.

  • You can work through multi-entity structures and explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues.

  • You’re confident working with external accountants and auditors, and can operate independently with sound judgment.

  • Experience with Xero and QuickBooks is important.

  • You’re comfortable in a fast-moving, client-focused environment and bring a disciplined approach to financial management.

This role is not a fit for someone whose experience is limited to public practice. The successful candidate will have worked inside an AEC business and understand the responsibility of owning its finance function.

Why consider it

You’ll have direct access to the managing partner, meaningful responsibility from day one, and the opportunity to influence how a growing technical business manages its finances. The company combines an entrepreneurial, client-focused culture with the need for careful financial oversight across a multi-entity business.

Compensation and benefits

The package includes three weeks of vacation to start, with additional vacation negotiable. Extended health and dental benefits, short- and long-term disability coverage, and 3% RRSP matching begin after the six-month probation period. Compensation will be discussed with candidates whose experience aligns with the role.
