Our Burnaby, BC based client is seeking a Data Governance Business Analyst for a 6-month contract opportunity. The contract would commence in March 2026 and run through September 2026 with a possibility of further renewal or conversion to a permanent position. They are hiring for 1 position in total. This is a hybrid role based out of Burnaby, BC office (3 on-site Tues, Wed, Thurs / 2 remote days Monday and Friday)
Data Governance Business Analyst
This role plays a critical part in helping data stewards in cataloging, documenting, classifying, and governing data assets across Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and AWS S3 data lake environments. The successful candidate will act as the bridge between business stakeholders and technical teams, ensuring that data asset/ data products are well understood, discoverable, and governed in alignment with regulatory and operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Data Cataloging & Metadata Management
- Support the onboarding, maintenance of data assets and curated data products in the Microsoft Purview Unified Data Catalog, including Fabric Lakehouse, Warehouses/db’s, Pipelines, Power BI semantic models, and AWS S3 dataset and other enterprise source system data.
- Configure scoped scanning of business domains, scan rules, and curation workflows.
- Assist in capturing and maintaining business metadata, technical metadata, and data descriptions in collaboration with data owners and stewards.
- Apply and validate data classifications and sensitivity labels (e.g., PII, financial, insurance-related data) according to governance standards.
Data Lineage & Documentation
- Assist in documenting end-to-end data lineage from source systems (e.g., Sales, Insurance, Membership, Mobility etc) through API ingestion pipelines and into analytical models and reports.
- Maintain data dictionaries, business definitions, and glossary entries to improve clarity and consistency across domains.
- Validate lineage accuracy in Microsoft Purview and flag gaps or inconsistencies to the Data Governance Lead.
Business Analysis & Stewardship Support
- Work with business units (Insurance, Membership, Mobility, FP&A, etc.) to gather requirements related to data definitions, ownership, and usage.
- Support data steward enablement, including onboarding stewards to Purview workflows and helping them maintain asset metadata.
- Facilitate governance-related workshops, interviews, and reviews to capture business context for key datasets and reports.
Governance Operations & Compliance
- Assist in monitoring compliance with governance standards related to data classification, retention, and access visibility.
- Support governance reporting and dashboards that track catalog coverage, stewardship participation, and data quality indicators.
- Help prepare documentation and evidence for audit, privacy, and compliance activities, including FOIPPA- and PIPEDA-related inquiries.
Continuous Improvement & Enablement
- Contribute to the development of governance playbooks, templates, and SOPs for metadata management and data stewardship.
- Identify opportunities to improve governance processes, metadata quality, and user experience within Microsoft Purview.
- Support change management activities related to new governance standards, tooling enhancements, or onboarding of new data domains.
