Job Title: Director of Estimating

Position Summary:

A leading mechanical contracting firm specializing in HVAC systems is seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Director of Estimating to lead its estimating department. Based in North Vancouver, this executive role is responsible for overseeing all pre-construction estimating functions and ensuring accurate, competitive, and timely bid submissions for commercial and institutional projects across the Lower Mainland and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and direction to the estimating team, including mentorship, training, and performance management.

  • Oversee the preparation of detailed cost estimates, budgets, and project proposals for HVAC construction and retrofit projects.

  • Collaborate with the executive team, project managers, and engineering staff to align estimates with company goals and client expectations.

  • Analyze project drawings, specifications, and requirements to develop accurate quantity take-offs and cost breakdowns.

  • Evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes to ensure competitive pricing and comprehensive scope coverage.

  • Identify and manage risk in project estimates and provide value engineering recommendations when appropriate.

  • Develop and maintain systems and procedures for the estimating department, including software tools and historical cost databases.

  • Lead bid strategy sessions and support business development by participating in client meetings and presentations.

  • Stay current on industry trends, market conditions, and pricing fluctuations.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in mechanical estimating, with at least 5 years in a leadership or management role.

  • Strong background in HVAC systems and mechanical contracting within the construction industry.

  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team.

  • Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Accubid, Trimble, or similar), Microsoft Excel, and project management tools.

  • Solid understanding of construction contracts, codes, and regulations in British Columbia.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

  • Engineering or construction-related degree or diploma is preferred; relevant certifications (e.g., Gold Seal) are an asset.
