MatchBox Consulting Group is currently seeking a Director of Infrastructure for a permanent role with a client of ours located in Vancouver—This role can be mostly remote with the 1 week/month on-site in Downtown Vancouver. The client is ideally seeking a Lower Mainland based candidate, but BC based or Alberta based candidates can also be considered.

We are seeking a Director of Infrastructure to lead and scale our IT environment, modernize our systems, and effectively leverage cloud resources with AWS. This role is pivotal to ensuring that our systems are secure, scalable, and aligned with the needs of a growing organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, proven leadership experience, and a passion for building resilient infrastructure.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 

• Leadership & Strategy: Develop and implement an infrastructure roadmap that supports company growth, focusing on security (ideally SOC 2 Type 2), scalability, and stability. Strengthen existing processes around disaster recovery, backup and restore, and assess needs around tooling, procuring those tools as necessary.
• Team Management: Lead and mentor a team of four, including an infrastructure manager and senior Linux administrators. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and growth, and help the team expand their skill sets in cloud expertise, particularly in AWS.
• Systems & Network Oversight: Oversee the design, maintenance, and optimization of IT systems, networks, and cloud infrastructure, ensuring high availability and reliability.
• Security & Compliance: Establish robust security practices and ensure compliance with industry standards, minimizing risks and protecting company data. Experience with SOC 2 Type 2 compliance is highly preferred.
• Collaboration: Align infrastructure initiatives with business needs and support product development. Engage in deep, highly technical discussions with vendors and clients on infrastructure, cloud services, and security, and translate these into terms business stakeholders can understand. Work closely with the DBA team, technical support & sustaining, and development to ensure cohesive infrastructure support. Partner with clients to solve their challenges effectively.
• Vendor & Budget Management: Manage relationships with vendors and provide budget recommendations to maximize value and cost-effectiveness.

 
Qualifications:
 

• Technical Expertise: We are looking for someone with significant expertise in cloud technologies, particularly AWS, who can effectively lead a team and ensure best practices are followed. This role requires:
  • A deep understanding of cloud-based infrastructure, including designing, deploying, and managing systems to maximize scalability and reliability.
  • Experience guiding and mentoring team members, helping them grow into skilled cloud professionals.
  • A solid grasp of bare metal systems. Our environment includes LAMP systems running on bare metal, which require specialized knowledge to maintain and modernize.
  • Networking expertise to optimize and secure our infrastructure, ensuring seamless connectivity across all components.
  • Familiarity with key tools such as Puppet and Foreman for automation, Cloudflare and SonicWall for network security, Datadog for monitoring, and Jira for work tracking. Experience with these or similar tools will allow you to make meaningful improvements from day one.
  • The ability to identify opportunities for process improvement and evaluate new tools that could benefit our infrastructure.
• Experience: 10+ years of experience in IT infrastructure, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
• Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing technical team.
• Problem-Solving Ability: Track record of solving complex infrastructure challenges and improving system performance.
• Communication: Excellent communication skills, capable of translating technical details into business context for stakeholders.
