About the Role

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Distribution Engineer (P.Eng) to join a leading power engineering and energy consulting firm based in Vancouver, BC, delivering innovative solutions across the electricity sector in Western Canada. This is a 12-month contract role with strong potential for extension, supporting the design and analysis of electrical distribution infrastructure across an active and growing project portfolio.

Reporting to the Engineering Lead, the Distribution Engineer will be responsible for the technical design and coordination of overhead and underground distribution systems, working alongside internal engineering teams and utility clients to deliver reliable, code-compliant distribution solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design and analyze overhead and underground electrical distribution systems, including new installations, upgrades, and relocations
• Develop and manage distribution line models using PLS-CADD, including sag-tension calculations, clearance analysis, and plan-profile drawings
• Perform load flow, fault current, and voltage drop analyses to support system planning and design
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, design packages, material specifications, and cost estimates
• Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes and standards (CSA, IEEE, ESA, and utility-specific requirements)
• Coordinate with project managers, utility clients, municipalities, and construction teams throughout project delivery
• Conduct field reviews and site assessments to support design development and construction oversight
• Support permit applications, utility submissions, and regulatory documentation as required
• Identify design issues and provide practical, cost-effective engineering solutions

Requirements

Must-Haves

• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation
• Proficiency in PLS-CADD for distribution line design and analysis
• 5+ years of experience in electrical distribution engineering
• Solid understanding of distribution system design principles, protection and coordination, and applicable codes and standards
• Experience preparing engineering drawings, technical reports, and construction packages
• Ability to manage multiple deliverables independently in a consulting environment
• Strong communication skills with the ability to liaise effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams

Nice-to-Haves

• Familiarity with BC Hydro, FortisBC, or other Western Canadian utility distribution standards
• Experience with distribution system planning or power flow analysis software
• Exposure to smart grid technologies or underground distribution design
