MatchBox Consulting Group is partnering with a growing multidisciplinary engineering firm to find a Lead Hydrotechnical Engineer to help drive and expand their water resources practice across Western Canada.
This is a unique leadership-track opportunity for a technically strong engineer who thrives in building something from the ground up. Whether you're in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, or any of our client’s Western Canadian offices, you'll play a foundational role in shaping a hydrotechnical team with the autonomy and support to make it your own.
Why This Role?
If you're someone who wants to step beyond traditional project delivery and into something bigger—like building a practice, mentoring junior staff, and putting your stamp on meaningful infrastructure projects—this role was built for you.
You'll lead hydrotechnical design work focused on rivers, stormwater, erosion protection, culverts, and municipal infrastructure, while also playing a key role in business development and strategy.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead and deliver hydrotechnical design projects focused on erosion protection, riverbanks, culverts, outfalls, stormwater, and flood mitigation
- Engage with clients and internal teams to deliver high-quality, community-impacting projects across Western Canada.
- Act as a technical mentor to junior and intermediate engineers, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.
- Take a strategic role in growing the hydrotechnical service offering in your region—develop client relationships, pursue new project opportunities, and contribute to long-term business development planning.
- Perform and oversee hydraulic and hydrologic modeling using tools such as HEC-RAS and InfoWorks ICM.
- Work closely with multi-disciplinary teams across the company to deliver successful projects from proposal to construction administration.
What We’re Looking For
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA, EGBC, or another provincial regulatory body in Western Canada.
- 10+ years of experience in water resources or hydrotechnical engineering with a focus on “hard” river engineering: riverbank stabilization, bridge protection, creek restoration, etc.
- Experience working in municipal environments is preferred.
- Demonstrated interest or experience in team leadership or mentoring—formal management experience is a bonus but not required.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate internally and represent the company externally.
- Experience with hydrologic modeling; bonus points for HEC-RAS 2D, InfoWorks ICM, and ArcGIS familiarity.
- Entrepreneurial spirit: someone who thrives in shaping and building something new.
Why Join This Team?
You’ll be stepping into a high-growth environment where leadership is earned—not inherited. This role isn’t about maintaining the status quo—it’s about building, shaping, and leading from the ground up. If you’re ready to chart your own path in hydrotechnical engineering and leave a legacy, we want to hear from you.
