P&C Commissioning Engineer

MatchBox Consulting Group is recruiting on behalf of its client for a Specialist P&C Commissioning Engineer to join a Protection, Control, and Telecommunications Engineering team supporting critical utility infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will join a Project Engineering and Commissioning team focused on the final verification, testing, and acceptance of protection and control systems before they are placed into service. This role is well suited to a senior engineer who enjoys troubleshooting, problem solving, technical leadership, and working closely with field and project teams on complex infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

• Act as a subject matter expert for protection and control commissioning activities across projects

• Act as the Professional of Record for commissioning results and prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables in accordance with applicable engineering practice requirements

• Coordinate and oversee the development of P&C staging plans with engineering teams and control centre stakeholders

• Lead testing and commissioning activities for specialized protection and control systems and equipment

• Prepare commissioning plans for complex P&C systems and review testing deliverables for technical acceptance

• Provide oversight and technical direction during protection and control commissioning activities in the field

• Participate in constructability reviews and staging plan development

• Support field commissioning teams by reviewing test results, troubleshooting issues, and providing technical guidance

• Establish and maintain commissioning standards, practices, workflows, and review procedures

• Collaborate with field operations, quality, and project engineering teams to support construction and commissioning activities

• Coach and mentor team members while supporting the technical and operational performance of the team

• Contribute to department objectives, performance measures, process improvements, and quality assurance practices

• Identify problems, mitigate risks, and develop practical solutions to complex engineering challenges

• Chair technical meetings and participate in presentations, seminars, and technical discussions as required

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or an advanced degree in a related engineering discipline recognized by Canadian universities

• Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC

• Strong understanding of EGBC quality management guidelines, continuing education requirements, and code of ethics

• Minimum 10 years of progressive engineering experience in areas such as transmission power systems, industrial control systems, cybersecurity, or systems engineering

• Minimum 4 years of experience leading and coordinating protection and control commissioning activities on medium to large infrastructure projects

• Strong understanding of how projects impact transmission system operations and multidisciplinary project delivery

• Strong leadership, troubleshooting, communication, and technical writing skills

• Ability to coordinate and influence internal teams, external delivery partners, and field resources

• Solid understanding of project management principles and engineering project delivery processes

• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing

• Willingness to travel to project sites as required

Assets

• Experience with protection and control systems as a designer or settings engineer

• Direct protection and control commissioning experience

• Knowledge of utility project delivery processes and engineering design practices

• Experience working on projects similar in size and complexity to large electric utility infrastructure environments
