Matchbox Consulting Group is seeking a Protection & Control Design Engineer (E3) for our client, a leading electrical utility organization, to support station protection and control (P&C) projects across British Columbia. This position will play a key role in designing and delivering high-quality engineering solutions within transmission and distribution environments.

This is a hybrid contract role of 1 year based in Burnaby, BC, ideal for a professional engineer experienced in substation design and protection & control systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop safe, effective engineering designs for protection and control systems in electrical utility substations (12kV to 500kV).

• Prepare detailed design packages including single line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, and material lists.

• Prepare documentation such as specifications, calculations, design bases, test plans, and hazard logs in accordance with established engineering design practices.

• Conduct independent studies and analyses, exercising sound judgment in selecting and interpreting technical information.

• Perform construction quality control, monitoring, and field reviews to ensure design compliance.

• Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and review of designs prepared by others.

• Support project management in meeting cost, quality, and schedule objectives by preparing reports, estimates, and progress documentation.

• Provide technical assistance during construction and commissioning, including field support and site travel as required.

• Maintain project documentation and sealed deliverables in compliance with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) requirements.

Qualifications & Requirements

Must Haves:

• Minimum of four (4) years of relevant engineering experience.

• Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science or Engineering.

• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC or eligible for registration in BC.

• Experience in the design of protection and control systems for substations (12kV–500kV).

• Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards.

• Proficiency with industry design/analysis software and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

• Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel to various sites across the province, including remote locations.

• Must hold, or have access to, a valid EGBC Permit to Practice (sole practitioner or firm-based).

Assets:

• Experience within the utilities or power generation sector.

• Strong technical writing and documentation skills.

• Familiarity with digital sign and seal technology (e.g., Notarius).
