MatchBox Consulting Group is recruiting on behalf of its client for a Protection and Control Planning Engineer to join a well-established utility engineering team supporting the safe and reliable operation of transmission, distribution, and generation systems.
The successful candidate will bring strong technical depth in electric utility protection and control systems, along with the ability to lead studies, solve complex engineering problems, and provide guidance across projects and technical initiatives. This role is well suited to an experienced engineer who enjoys working on technically challenging systems, mentoring others, and contributing to high-impact utility infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Plan, evaluate, and integrate protective relaying schemes and remedial action schemes, including teleprotection and data communications
- Perform digital fault studies and other relay or system studies to determine protection and control requirements and relay settings
- Evaluate interconnection requests from customers and independent power producers for connection to the transmission system
- Provide technical leadership and act as a subject matter resource across programs, projects, and engineering initiatives
- Analyze and resolve complex engineering problems, including protection system performance and relay misoperations
- Provide technical direction to engineers, consultants, and support staff, and contribute to practical and effective engineering solutions
- Lead technical responsibilities related to specific focus areas such as compliance standards, estimating practices, or planning criteria
- Support and mentor team members while contributing to a collaborative and inclusive engineering environment
- Coordinate with stakeholders and project teams to support delivery across scope, schedule, cost, and technical risk considerations
Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a focus in Power Engineering
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC
- Minimum 10 years of experience in the engineering, design, and implementation of electric utility protection and control systems
- Strong expertise in transmission and generation P&C systems from 12 kV to 500 kV, including transmission lines, transformers, capacitors, reactors, and circuit breakers
- Strong knowledge of NERC PRC standards compliance and utility protection requirements
- Demonstrated ability to investigate and solve engineering issues, including protective device misoperations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly explain technical matters
- Proven ability to coordinate multiple projects and provide technical leadership across teams
- Experience applying project management principles including scope, schedule, cost, and technical risk management
- Ability to work effectively with stakeholders and support sound engineering decisions in a utility environment
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing
- Willingness to work in a hybrid environment and travel occasionally as required
