Senior Project Accountant

Major National General Contractor | Edmonton, AB | Full-Time, Office-Based

MatchBox Consulting Group is searching on behalf of a major national general contractor for a Senior Project Accountant to join its Edmonton team.

This is a highly visible role for an experienced project accounting professional who wants to be closer to the operational side of construction. Rather than sitting in a traditional corporate accounting function, you will work directly with project managers, superintendents, coordinators and senior leadership to understand how major projects are performing, identify financial risks and ensure project teams remain accountable to established controls and procedures.

You will take ownership of the financial administration of large and complex construction projects, potentially including projects valued at more than $200 million. You will oversee project billing, accounts receivable, subcontractor and vendor payments, monthly close, forecasting, cash-position reporting and project closeout. Just as importantly, you will help project leaders understand the financial implications of their decisions and raise concerns before they become larger issues.

This position requires someone who is comfortable asking questions, challenging inconsistencies and holding operational teams accountable. You will regularly communicate financial information to different levels of the organization, so the ability to build relationships, present information clearly and work confidently across departments is essential.

The Senior Project Accountant will also provide guidance and mentorship to junior accounting team members. You will help establish strong project accounting practices, maintain internal controls and contribute to the continued development of a growing operational finance team.

The Edmonton accounting group currently includes six team members and is preparing to welcome a new Accounting Manager in July. With several active projects and continued growth across the business, this is an opportunity to join at an important stage and have a meaningful influence on how the team operates.

What You Bring

You have several years of progressive accounting experience and a strong understanding of project accounting, financial reporting, cost controls and general accounting principles. Experience within construction, engineering or another project-based industry would be a significant advantage.

You are comfortable reviewing contracts, interpreting billing requirements, analyzing project costs and identifying trends or inconsistencies within financial data. You can manage competing deadlines without losing sight of detail, and you are confident communicating with project managers and senior operational leaders.

A CPA designation is not required. Candidates who are currently pursuing their CPA—or who would like to begin the process—will receive support from the company.

Experience with SAP is strongly preferred. Exposure to Textura, advanced Excel functions or other construction financial-management systems would also be valuable.

This is a full-time, five-day-per-week office-based position in Edmonton, with occasional travel to project sites or other Alberta offices as required.
