MatchBox Consulting Group is currently seeking a Project Engineer Specialist on behalf of our client, a major utilities organization supporting large-scale energy infrastructure projects across British Columbia. This role sits within the Lines & Interconnections Project Engineering team and plays a key part in delivering complex transmission infrastructure projects.
The Project Engineer Specialist is responsible for managing the engineering scope of large and technically complex capital projects. This includes coordinating multi-disciplinary engineering teams, overseeing technical deliverables, and ensuring designs meet operational, safety, and system integration requirements.
This is an opportunity for a senior engineer who enjoys working across diverse infrastructure projects involving substations, transmission systems, and related electrical assets. The position is based in Burnaby and operates in a hybrid work environment, with occasional travel to project sites across British Columbia and potentially other locations in North America.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership
- Manage the engineering scope, schedule, and cost components of large or technically complex infrastructure projects.
- Lead engineering activities across project phases including conceptual design, detailed engineering, construction support, and commissioning.
- Coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering teams to ensure alignment with project requirements and timelines.
Owner’s Engineer Oversight
- Act as the Owner’s Engineer Lead when engineering work is completed by external consultants or equipment vendors.
- Coordinate internal engineering reviews and acceptance of externally produced designs and documentation.
Project Coordination
- Work closely with project managers to align engineering deliverables with overall project scope, cost, and schedule.
- Establish engineering work plans, review strategies, resource plans, and technical delivery schedules.
- Coordinate development and review of technical specifications, engineering drawings, and design documentation.
Technical Risk Management
- Identify and manage technical risks, particularly those related to system integration with existing transmission infrastructure.
- Ensure engineering requirements are addressed during manufacturing, construction, and commissioning phases.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with construction teams, contract management, quality management, field operations, and engineering groups to ensure effective technical support during project execution.
- Provide technical guidance and resolution of engineering issues throughout project delivery.
Stakeholder Communication
- Prepare and review technical recommendations and communications for leadership.
- Deliver presentations and updates on complex engineering matters to senior management and project stakeholders.
Mentorship and Leadership
- Mentor and coach engineers performing Project Engineer roles within the department and across business groups.
- Support development of engineering staff and contribute to effective team performance.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
Professional Registration
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of progressive engineering experience, ideally within power utilities or large infrastructure environments.
- Strong experience with one or more of the following:
- Substations
- Transmission lines
- Protection and control systems
- At least 4 years of experience leading and coordinating multi-disciplinary design teams on medium to large infrastructure projects.
Technical Expertise
- Experience delivering projects across the full engineering lifecycle, from conceptual design through testing and commissioning.
- Strong understanding of transmission system impacts and operational considerations when executing infrastructure upgrades.
Skills
- Excellent leadership, coordination, and stakeholder management abilities.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
- Solid understanding of project management principles and engineering project delivery processes.
Preferred Experience
- Experience overseeing Owner’s Engineer reviews for externally designed engineering work.
- Background in telecommunications and/or protection and control systems within utility infrastructure.
- Experience with transmission line or substation projects.
- Familiarity with utility project delivery processes and engineering standards.
- Site experience supporting construction of large energy infrastructure such as hydroelectric facilities, substations, or transmission systems.
Additional Requirements
- Must maintain Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration in good standing with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
- Must maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing.
- This role is safety-sensitive, and successful candidates will be required to complete pre-employment alcohol and drug testing.
