MatchBox Consulting Group is currently seeking a Team Lead, Software Development for a permanent role with a client of ours located in Vancouver. The role is hybrid at the clients downtown Vancouver office 3 days in office and 2 days remote.
About the Role
The way software gets built is changing. Developers today aren't just writing code to someone else's specifications—they're engaging with customers, making design decisions, and owning problems from discovery through delivery. AI has dramatically expanded what a single developer can accomplish, and the strongest teams are the ones embracing this shift.
As a Dev Team Lead, you'll lead a team of talented, cross-functional developers. You'll own the technical vision for the product, including architecture, reliability, and system health, while remaining accountable for your team's delivery. Working closely with a Product Manager and Designer as a collaborative leadership trio, you'll help shape both product direction and execution. This role is approximately a 50/50 split between people leadership and hands-on technical contribution.
This is a hybrid position requiring work from a downtown Vancouver office three days per week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).
What You'll Do
Lead and Grow a High-Performing Team
- Build strong, individualized relationships with each member of your team—understanding their motivations, strengths, and growth opportunities.
- Coach and mentor developers to become stronger engineers, problem-solvers, and communicators.
- Create an environment where people can do the best work of their careers through high trust, high standards, and direct feedback.
- Foster a culture of ownership, urgency, accountability, and pride in craftsmanship.
Own Technical Vision and Delivery
- Serve as the technical authority for your product area and the go-to resource for complex technical challenges.
- Make sound architectural decisions and guide the team in balancing reliability, technical debt, and feature development.
- Contribute directly as a senior individual contributor through coding, code reviews, and technical leadership.
- Take accountability for team outcomes and proactively communicate progress, risks, and trade-offs to stakeholders.
Advance AI-Assisted Development Practices
- Explore emerging AI models, tools, and agentic development workflows.
- Champion AI adoption and best practices across the engineering team.
- Help developers leverage AI effectively to increase productivity, quality, and impact.
Partner Across the Business
- Collaborate closely with Product Management and Design to define and execute a cohesive product vision.
- Bring strong product and business judgment to discussions around customer needs, prioritization, and value delivery.
- Engage directly with customers when needed, including product demonstrations, feedback sessions, and discovery conversations.
- Develop a deep understanding of the product, customers, and key business challenges.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of software development experience with demonstrated senior-level technical expertise.
- 2+ years of engineering leadership experience, with a proven ability to develop and grow team members.
- A passion for coaching and mentoring others, with a genuine commitment to helping people reach their potential.
- Strong curiosity and enthusiasm for AI-assisted software development, with a willingness to experiment and learn.
- Cross-functional experience and comfort working across engineering, product, design, and business domains.
- High standards, a growth mindset, and a continuous improvement mentality.
- A strong sense of ownership, accountability, and initiative.
Nice to Have
- Experience in transit, mobility, transportation, or logistics technology.
- Experience working at a high-growth startup or scaling technology company.
