MatchBox Consulting Group is currently seeking Telecom Engineers (Intermediate and Senior levels) for a major utility infrastructure organization based in Burnaby, BC.
This organization is expanding and modernizing its power system to support the province’s growing demand for clean and reliable energy. As part of this transformation, its telecommunications network is evolving to provide faster, more resilient, and more secure connectivity across a large and geographically distributed infrastructure.
The engineering team is responsible for designing and upgrading the telecommunications systems that support grid reliability, industrial growth, system expansion, and the replacement of aging infrastructure across the province.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to one of the largest and most complex private telecommunications networks in the region, supporting critical systems such as SCADA communications, grid protection, and operational technologies.
The position is hybrid and based in Burnaby, BC, requiring approximately three days per week in the office, with occasional travel within the province to support telecom infrastructure projects.
Engineers in this group also have access to hands-on training and a dedicated telecom technology lab, where next-generation systems are tested and validated prior to deployment in the field.
Key Responsibilities
As an Intermediate or Senior Telecom Engineer, you will help design and deliver critical telecommunications systems that support utility operations, SCADA communications, grid protection, and cybersecurity infrastructure.
Responsibilities include:
- Lead the design and engineering of telecommunications networks and circuits, ensuring reliability, performance, and security for real-time grid operations and emerging utility technologies.
- Serve as Professional of Record (PoR) for internal designs and act as Owner’s Engineer when reviewing external engineering service provider submissions.
- Prepare engineering calculations, design drawings, and implementation documentation for telecom infrastructure installations.
- Design and support deployment of telecom systems including:
- Microwave radio links
- Fiber optic networks (DWDM / OTN)
- WiMAX radio networks
- Satellite communications
- Power Line Carrier links
- LTE networks
- Leased telecom facilities
- IP/MPLS transport networks
- Digital cross-connect switches
- SONET multiplexers
- TETRA / VHF / UHF mobile radio systems
- Teleprotection systems
- -48 VDC power systems
- Design and implement IP/MPLS network architectures, including network planning, configuration, interoperability testing, and migration activities.
- Develop QoS and traffic engineering strategies to ensure deterministic performance for mission-critical services such as SCADA and protection systems.
- Provide engineering documentation, field validation, and technical support during network cutovers and system deployments.
- Work closely with project managers and construction teams to ensure projects meet safety, schedule, and cost objectives.
- Provide technical leadership during installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
- Conduct engineering studies and technical investigations related to transport networks, SCADA communications, protection circuits, and cybersecurity-related telecom infrastructure.
- Ensure engineering work meets professional engineering standards and industry best practices.
- Participate in site visits, field validation, and support of maintenance or restoration activities affecting critical telecom systems.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline from a recognized institution.
Candidates must meet one of the following:
- Registered P.Eng. or EIT with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC)
- Registered in another Canadian jurisdiction and eligible for transfer
- Internationally registered and pursuing licensure in British Columbia
- Actively working toward EGBC registration
Technical Experience
Experience designing or supporting telecommunications systems such as:
- Microwave radio systems
- Fiber optic networks (DWDM / OTN)
- WiMAX radio networks
- Satellite communications
- Power Line Carrier links
- LTE networks
- Leased telecom infrastructure
- Digital cross-connect systems
- SONET multiplexers

- TDM (SONET / PDH) and IP/MPLS circuits supporting teleprotection and RAS
IP/MPLS Networking Experience
Experience may include:
- IPv4 / IPv6
- OSPF
- IS-IS
- BGP
- MPLS / VPN
- EVPN
- Segment Routing
- Quality of Service (QoS)
- Traffic Engineering
- Security within large-scale LAN/WAN environments
Platform Experience
Experience with:
- Configuration and deployment of Nokia IP/MPLS platforms
- Implementation of L2/L3 VPN and QoS technologies
Certifications (Assets)
- Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)
- Nokia Network Routing Specialist II (NRS II)
- Nokia Certified Service Routing Architect (SRA)
Experience Levels
Opportunities are available at multiple engineering levels:
- Senior Engineer: 8+ years of relevant experience
- Engineer 2: 4+ years of relevant experience
- Engineer 1: Candidates with less experience may be considered if eligible for EIT registration
Additional Skills
- Strong technical writing and communication abilities
- Ability to work independently and solve complex technical problems
- Understanding of project management, contract management, and construction oversight
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License for site visits and field support

- Occasional travel within British Columbia may be required to support telecom infrastructure projects
