MatchBox Consulting Group is currently seeking a Civil Engineer, Municipal Infrastructure on behalf of our client, a well-established Canadian consulting engineering firm with a strong municipal infrastructure practice in Calgary, Alberta.
This role sits within a Municipal Infrastructure team that delivers complex projects related to water, sanitary, and stormwater infrastructure, with an emphasis on underground installations. The successful candidate will support project delivery across studies, design, cost estimates, specifications, contract documents, construction management, and construction inspection.
This is a permanent opportunity based in Calgary, AB, with a hybrid work model. The successful candidate will be required to work in office 5 days per week for the first 3 months, then transition to 2 days per week in office.
The Role
As Civil Engineer, you will support the planning, design, coordination, and delivery of municipal infrastructure projects across Calgary and Alberta.
You will work on water, sanitary, stormwater, drainage, grading, and underground utility projects in both brownfield and greenfield settings. This role requires someone who can step into project work quickly, contribute technically, and support mentorship within the team with limited ramp-up time.
Key Responsibilities
Municipal Infrastructure Design & Project Delivery
- Prepare engineering studies, designs, cost estimates, specifications, and construction contract documents for municipal infrastructure projects.
- Support projects related to stormwater drainage, water transmission, sanitary sewer collection, grading, and underground utility systems.
- Act as Engineer of Record for designs, technical reports, cost estimates, specifications, and contract documents completed independently or through direct supervision.
- Lead and collaborate with project teams from concept through design, tendering, construction, and closeout.
Construction Administration & Technical Review
- Support tenders, constructability assessments, contract administration, and construction inspection.
- Complete QA/QC reviews for technical deliverables prepared by other Engineers of Record.
- Review project deliverables for accuracy, constructability, compliance, and alignment with applicable standards.
- Support construction-stage deliverables, including responses to technical questions and coordination with project stakeholders.
Team Collaboration & Mentorship
- Mentor and coach engineers and technologists on technical work and project delivery processes.
- Work closely with internal teams, clients, vendors, third-party utility owners, and project stakeholders.
- Contribute to a collaborative team environment while managing timelines, priorities, and project requirements.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
- Registered Professional Engineer with APEGA, or eligible for registration with APEGA within six months of hire.
- 5+ years of civil engineering experience, with 8+ years strongly preferred.
- Experience in the design and construction of municipal infrastructure projects, including stormwater drainage, water transmission, sanitary sewer collection, grading, and underground utility systems.
- Experience working on brownfield and greenfield infrastructure projects.
- Proven understanding of government and industry standards, specifications, regulations, and guidelines related to water, sanitary, and stormwater infrastructure design and construction.
- Ability to contribute to project delivery with limited ramp-up time and support mentorship within the team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within Alberta as required.
Nice to Haves
- Consulting engineering experience.
- Owner-side municipal infrastructure experience.
- Experience with City of Calgary and Alberta requirements.
- Experience with alternative construction delivery.
- Established relationships with product vendors and third-party utility owners.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
