Mechanical Engineer (Piping)

Location: Burnaby, BC (Hybrid – Edmonds Office)
Duration: 12-Month Contract
Schedule: Initially 10–20 hours per week, with workload expected to increase as additional projects come online.

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support one of British Columbia's largest utility providers. This is an exciting opportunity to work on hydroelectric and thermal generation projects, designing and supporting critical balance of plant systems that help keep British Columbia powered.

You'll join a collaborative engineering team delivering projects ranging from asset condition assessments and operational support to large capital upgrades valued at over $100 million.

Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical engineering solutions for industrial piping and auxiliary systems.

  • Perform engineering design, analysis, calculations, and technical reporting.

  • Prepare issued-for-construction drawings, specifications, engineering memos, and supporting documentation.

  • Conduct field investigations, site assessments, and construction support activities.

  • Review engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including electrical, civil, mechanical, estimating, procurement, operations, construction management, and project management.

  • Support project planning, estimating, budgeting, and engineering risk management.

  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering practices and project execution.

  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, technologists, consultants, and designers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized Canadian university.

  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.

  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.

  • Strong knowledge of ASME, ASTM, API, MSS, CSA, and applicable industry codes and standards.

  • Experience designing or supporting industrial piping systems, including water, air, oil, gas, and fuel systems.

  • Experience with pumps, compressors, pressure vessels, pump stations, or backup diesel generators.

  • Experience delivering engineering work from conceptual design through construction and project turnover.

  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within hydroelectric generation, utilities, mining, oil and gas, or other heavy industrial environments.

  • Experience delivering industrial piping and HVAC projects from concept through commissioning.

  • Experience with Autodesk Plant 3D, Navisworks, ReCap, BIM modeling, and clash detection.

  • Experience using AFT FATHOM, CAESAR II, or similar piping analysis software.

  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading technical work packages.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid work arrangement based out of the Edmonds office in Burnaby.

  • Approximately three days per week onsite.

  • Travel to facilities and project sites across British Columbia (approximately 10–15% of the assignment).
