Senior Protection & Control Commissioning Engineer
Location: Burnaby, BC (Hybrid)
Duration: 12-Month Contract (High Likelihood of Extension)
MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Protection & Control (P&C) Commissioning Engineer to support one of British Columbia's largest utility providers. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineering professional to provide commissioning acceptance services, technical leadership, and operational support for critical transmission and distribution infrastructure across the province.
Working with multidisciplinary teams, you'll play a key role in commissioning Protection & Control systems, supporting real-time power system operations, and resolving complex technical challenges in the field.
Responsibilities

Lead commissioning acceptance activities for Protection & Control systems in transmission and distribution substations.

Provide advanced technical support for transmission system protection and control equipment.

Perform power system disturbance analysis, fault investigations, and technical studies.

Support P&C system integration testing, commissioning standards, and real-time operational activities.

Review, approve, and seal commissioning documentation as the Professional of Record.

Provide technical guidance and support to field technologists and project teams.

Conduct field reviews, site inspections, and commissioning activities throughout British Columbia.

Develop and improve P&C commissioning and maintenance standards.

Coordinate special testing requirements, contingency plans, and operating procedures.

Participate in multidisciplinary technical committees and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
-
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for registration.

Minimum 10 years of relevant engineering experience.

Minimum 4 years of Protection & Control commissioning experience.

Strong technical knowledge of transmission system protection and control.

Experience with P&C testing, commissioning best practices, fault analysis, and investigations.

Strong technical writing, presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to travel to construction sites throughout British Columbia as required.
Must Haves
-
10+ years of engineering experience.
-
4+ years of Protection & Control commissioning experience.
-
P.Eng. registration with EGBC (or eligibility).
-
Strong knowledge of P&C testing and commissioning best practices.

Field experience with transmission and distribution systems.
-
Experience performing fault analysis and system investigations.
-
Excellent communication, organizational, and technical writing skills.
-
Willingness to travel throughout British Columbia.
Nice to Have
-
Experience supporting transmission systems operating from 12 kV to 500 kV.
-
Experience with power system disturbance analysis and real-time operations support.
-
Experience developing commissioning standards and maintenance practices.

Experience supporting Communications, Protection & Control (CPC) field teams.
Work Environment
-
Hybrid work arrangement based out of the office in Burnaby (Monday, Thursday, and Friday in office).

Remote candidates located within British Columbia may be considered.

Regular travel to project and construction sites across the province is required.
