MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Superintendent on behalf of our client, an established Alberta general contractor specializing in institutional, commercial, and industrial construction.

This role is ideal for an experienced Superintendent who has successfully managed large institutional, commercial and/or industrial projects from start to finish, with school construction experience being a strong asset. The successful candidate will have significant autonomy to run their site, manage trades and schedules, resolve issues proactively, and help mentor the next generation of field leadership.

This is a hands-on environment suited to someone who is self-sufficient, takes ownership of their projects, and is comfortable making decisions without relying on a large corporate support structure.

Location: Alberta — candidates can be based anywhere in the province; regular travel to project sites is required and travel costs are covered
Job Type: Full-Time
Schedule: On site Monday–Thursday; Fridays in office when working near the Sherwood Park area
 

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day construction activities on large ICI projects from mobilization through completion.

• Manage and coordinate site workforce, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and trade contractors.

• Maintain project schedules and ensure construction activities remain on track.

• Monitor project costs and support effective cost control throughout construction.

• Implement and maintain quality control programs.

• Maintain a strong commitment to site safety and safe construction practices.

• Coordinate closely with Project Managers, Project Coordinators, owners, consultants, inspectors, and trade contractors.

• Proactively identify and resolve construction issues before they impact schedule, cost, or quality.

• Take ownership of site-level decision-making and escalate major concerns to leadership when required.

• Mentor and support junior and mid-level field staff as they develop their construction leadership experience.

• Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with drawings, specifications, budgets, schedules, and quality expectations.

Qualifications

Must-Haves

• 10+ years of commercial construction experience as a Superintendent.
• Strong ICI construction experience, with school construction experience being particularly important.
• Demonstrated experience managing projects in excess of $15 million.
• Experience running major construction projects through the full project lifecycle from start to finish.
• Ability to independently manage a construction site and make day-to-day project decisions.
• Strong experience coordinating subcontractors, trades, manpower, materials, schedules, and site activities.
• Proven ability to identify problems early and take initiative to resolve them.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to prioritize multiple site responsibilities in a fast-moving construction environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Project.
• Valid, clean driver’s licence.
• Willingness to travel to project sites throughout Alberta.
• Ability and willingness to mentor junior and developing construction professionals.

Nice-to-Haves

• Previous experience building schools or hospitals from start to finish.
• Journeyman Carpenter background or ticket.
• National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification.
• Post-secondary education in Construction, Building Technology, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
• Experience working in a smaller or mid-sized general contractor environment where Superintendents have significant project autonomy.
