MatchBox Consulting Group is currently seeking a Director, Internal Audit on behalf of our client, a prominent Alberta-based energy organization with a mandate to support a reliable and competitive electricity market. This is a permanent, senior leadership role based in downtown Calgary operating in a hybrid work environment.
The Director, Internal Audit is an enterprise-wide leader responsible for setting the strategic direction for internal audit, risk, and compliance. Reporting functionally to the Audit Committee and administratively to the VP, Finance and Compliance, this role plays a critical part in ensuring the organization’s most significant risks are identified, assessed, and actively managed.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Audit Leadership
- Develop and evolve a forward-looking, risk-based internal audit plan covering strategic, financial, operational, cyber, third-party, fraud, and project risks.
- Position internal audit as a key contributor to enterprise resilience and governance maturity.
Governance & Board Assurance
- Provide the Audit Committee with integrated assurance over governance, risk management, and internal controls.
- Bring difficult issues forward and facilitate the right conversations at the appropriate leadership level.
Enterprise Risk Oversight
- Lead enterprise risk identification, assessment, and mitigation across key risk domains.
- Challenge management’s risk assumptions to ensure completeness, consistency, and transparency.
Executive Advisory
- Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and the Board on emerging risks, regulatory developments, and strategic initiatives.
Team Leadership
- Build and develop a high-performing internal audit function grounded in professional judgment and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline.
Designations
- Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Chartered Accountant (CA) required.
Experience
- 10–12+ years of progressive experience in internal audit, risk management, or assurance.
- Minimum 4 years in a leadership or management capacity.
- Proven experience engaging directly with executive leadership and Board-level stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead enterprise risk discussions and drive risk-informed decision-making.
Skills
- Exceptional communication skills — able to simplify complex risk concepts for senior audiences.
- Strong professional judgment, executive presence, and the confidence to challenge and influence.
- Commitment to ethical standards and integrity.
Asset
- Experience in the electricity or energy industry is considered an asset.
