Civil Estimator – Earthworks & Underground Utilities

MatchBox Consulting Group is working with an established civil contractor looking for an experienced estimator to handle bids across earthworks, underground utilities and ground improvement.

Projects typically range from $250K to $10M+.

This is a small team, and you will be the main estimator. You need to be comfortable working through a bid independently, asking the right questions and dealing directly with ownership, suppliers, subcontractors and the field team.

The Role

You will manage estimates from initial review through final submission.

That includes reviewing drawings and specifications, completing takeoffs, building pricing and checking the scope against how the work will actually be completed in the field.

This role will suit someone who understands crews, equipment, production rates, access, sequencing and site conditions—not just the numbers on the bid sheet.

What You’ll Do

• Complete takeoffs and prepare estimates

• Price labour, equipment, materials and subcontracted work

• Review drawings, specifications and tender requirements

• Identify scope gaps, risks and constructability issues

• Request and compare supplier and subcontractor pricing

• Work with ownership on bid strategy

• Manage several tenders and deadlines at once

• Track upcoming opportunities through BuildConnect and other sources

• Maintain estimating records and past pricing

What They’re Looking For

• 3–8+ years in civil estimating or a related field role

• Experience with earthworks, underground utilities or ground improvement

• Strong takeoff and quantity skills

• A practical understanding of how civil work gets built

• Comfortable working independently

• Able to read drawings, specifications and bid documents

• Experience with Bluebeam, Agtek, Timberline or similar software

• Organized, accurate and reliable
