MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Protection & Control (P&C) Engineer  to work on a 1 year contract, with renewal potential for a major player in Canada's utility sector. This intermediate to senior-level role is ideal for someone with a strong background in substation design, protection schemes, and control systems, who thrives in a collaborative environment and wants to contribute to meaningful power system projects.

You’ll be joining a high-performing team involved in the design, analysis, and implementation of protection and control systems for substations and transmission infrastructure.

Candidates can be located in Alberta or BC, though periodic visits to the Vancouver region for meetings will be required. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and review protection and control schemes for substations and transmission systems (69kV to 500kV).

• Perform settings calculations and relay coordination for protective devices.

• Develop single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and wiring diagrams.

• Support testing and commissioning of P&C systems in the field.

• Work closely with other engineering disciplines, project managers, and field personnel to ensure quality and compliance with utility standards.

• Participate in engineering reviews, hazard assessments, and troubleshooting activities.

• Ensure all designs adhere to applicable regulatory, environmental, and safety standards.

Qualifications:

• 5–10+ years of experience in Protection & Control engineering within the utility or power generation sector.

• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta, or eligibility to register with APEGA.

• Strong knowledge of protective relays (SEL, GE, ABB) and associated software (e.g., SEL AcSELerator, CAPE, ASPEN).

• Hands-on experience with power system analysis, relay coordination, and settings development.

• Familiarity with utility standards, NERC reliability standards, and CSA/IEEE guidelines.

• Proficiency with CAD tools for schematic development (AutoCAD, MicroStation, etc.).

• Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Nice to Have:

• Field commissioning experience.

• Experience working with SCADA, RTUs, and telecom systems.

• Background working on capital or maintenance projects within a large utility.
