MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Lead Engineer, Facility Design on behalf of our client, a leading organization responsible for supporting the safe and reliable operation of Alberta’s electricity system.

The ideal candidate will have 15+ years of electrical engineering experience, with a strong background in substation design, transmission facilities, and power systems. Candidates from utility or EPC environments will be considered, with a strong preference for those familiar with Alberta’s electricity regulatory framework and customer connection processes.

  • Work Model: Hybrid – In-office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; Monday and Friday flexible

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior technical leadership and engineering oversight for transmission facility design and customer connection projects across Alberta.
  • Develop, review, approve, and authenticate functional specifications, facility scopes, PDUPs, service proposals, cost estimates, and energization packages.
  • Review engineering deliverables prepared by project engineers, ensuring technical accuracy, quality, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Provide technical expertise on substation design, transmission facilities, generation connections, and their integration with the broader power system.
  • Perform and review complex power system studies, engineering assessments, and technical evaluations.
  • Evaluate transmission equipment design, ratings, system performance, and facility requirements.
  • Collaborate with Transmission Facility Owners, Distribution Facility Owners, Generation Facility Owners, developers, consultants, and internal engineering teams.
  • Provide technical recommendations and make engineering decisions considering system reliability, regulatory requirements, project costs, operational risks, and customer needs.
  • Support customer connection projects throughout the project lifecycle, from initial technical assessments through facility design and energization.
  • Review and provide technical guidance on transmission facility requirements, cost estimates, and engineering economics.
  • Support compliance with ISO Rules, Alberta Reliability Standards, AESO Tariff requirements, and applicable regulatory frameworks.
  • Provide technical input on transmission planning, system operations, and customer connection requirements.
  • Support advanced engineering studies, including conductor and line optimization, anti-islanding assessments, and harmonic analysis.
  • Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and work review to project engineers and other engineering professionals.
  • Support project delivery activities, including scope management, scheduling, budgeting, resource planning, and change management.
  • Communicate complex technical information and engineering recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute to engineering best practices, continuous improvement initiatives, and the adoption of emerging technologies.
  • Support strategic engineering initiatives focused on improving the reliability, efficiency, and long-term performance of Alberta’s electricity system.

Qualifications – Must-Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA, or registered in another Canadian province and eligible for APEGA registration.
  • Minimum 15+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience within the electric utility, transmission, or power systems industry.
  • Strong technical experience with substation design and transmission facility engineering.
  • Demonstrated understanding of transmission systems, generation facilities, and their connection to the broader electricity grid.
  • Strong knowledge of transmission equipment design, ratings, and power system behaviour.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, or approving engineering specifications, technical scopes, cost estimates, and other transmission project deliverables.
  • Strong understanding of customer connection projects and transmission facility requirements.
  • Experience performing or reviewing power system studies and technical engineering assessments.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO Rules, Alberta Reliability Standards, Tariff requirements, and Alberta’s electricity regulatory framework.
  • Ability to assess technical, operational, financial, regulatory, and system reliability risks and provide practical engineering recommendations.
  • Experience working with utilities, facility owners, developers, consultants, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of project delivery, including scope, schedule, budget, resource planning, and change management.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership, engineering reviews, and mentorship to other engineers.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex engineering concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple engineering priorities and provide technical guidance across concurrent projects.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Direct experience preparing or reviewing functional specifications for substation and transmission facility projects.
  • Previous experience working with Alberta transmission utilities, generation owners, or the provincial electricity system operator.
  • Strong experience with transmission planning and transmission system operations.
  • Experience with power system modelling and analysis.
  • Experience with inverter-based resources, including renewable generation connections.
  • Experience leading or reviewing advanced technical studies, including conductor and line optimization, anti-islanding assessments, and harmonic analysis.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing Project Data Update Packages (PDUPs), service proposals, and energization packages.
  • Experience with engineering economics and transmission facility cost estimating.
  • Knowledge of distribution system design.
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Power Systems.
  • Experience supporting engineering standards, regulatory initiatives, or continuous improvement activities.
  • Experience working in both EPC and utility environments.
