About the Opportunity
MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking an experienced SCADA Design Engineer – Protection & Control to support one of British Columbia's largest utility providers.
This opportunity focuses on the design, configuration, programming, testing, and commissioning of SCADA systems used in high-voltage electrical substations operating from 12 kV to 500 kV.
The successful candidate will join a specialized Protection & Control engineering team delivering multidisciplinary capital projects across transmission substations, generating stations, and distribution facilities.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with hands-on SCADA and RTU experience who enjoys technical design, system integration, troubleshooting, and supporting critical electrical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities

Design, configure, test, and troubleshoot SCADA systems for electrical utility substations operating from 12 kV to 500 kV.

Develop detailed SCADA engineering design packages, including device point assignments, configurations, technical specifications, and drawings.

Configure and program GE RTUs (D400, D20, D200, D25, IBOX), gateway devices, user interfaces, network switches, routers, and other Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).

Work with Ethernet networks, DNP3, Modbus Plus, and associated communication protocols and testing equipment.

Develop engineering documentation, including evaluation reports, design calculations, specifications, estimates, hazard logs, and test plans.

Prepare design work packages, including scope definitions, schedules, and level-of-effort estimates.

Perform laboratory testing and validation of SCADA device configurations.

Develop and execute pre-commissioning test plans and support system integration, factory testing, installation, and commissioning.

Act as Professional of Record (PoR) for engineering deliverables, ensuring compliance with applicable engineering standards and professional practice requirements.

Provide technical assistance, field engineering support, and construction reviews at substations as required.

Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, contractors, suppliers, and external service providers.

Review engineering designs and provide technical guidance to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry standards.

Support knowledge sharing and provide technical training to peers and end users.
Required Qualifications
-
Minimum 4 years of relevant engineering experience, preferably within electrical utility SCADA or Protection & Control engineering.

Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
-
Valid EGBC Permit to Practice, either as a sole practitioner or through an engineering firm.

Experience designing, configuring, testing, and troubleshooting SCADA systems used in electrical utility substations.

Experience with utility SCADA equipment, including GE RTUs, gateway devices, and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).

Knowledge of Ethernet networks and industrial communication protocols such as DNP3 and Modbus Plus.

Experience preparing engineering design packages, technical documentation, and testing procedures.
-
Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and develop practical engineering solutions.
-
Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder coordination skills.
-
University degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
-
Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.

Basic First Aid certification.

Ability to travel to substations for field reviews, testing, and commissioning support.
Nice to Have
-
Additional experience with automation and SCADA systems.

Familiarity with NERC reliability requirements.

Previous experience working within an electrical utility environment.

Experience supporting high-voltage transmission substations, generating stations, or distribution facilities.

Familiarity with CAD systems, engineering drawing standards, and industry-standard design software.

Experience with multidisciplinary engineering projects, field commissioning, and technical troubleshooting.
