Senior Project Engineer – Hydroelectric Generation

Location: Burnaby, BC
Duration: 12-Month Contract
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – minimum 3 days per week in office
Travel: Periodic travel throughout BC, with occasional North American or international travel

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to support major hydroelectric generation infrastructure projects for one of British Columbia’s largest utility providers.

This is an opportunity for an experienced Electrical or Mechanical Engineer who wants to work at the intersection of technical engineering and major project delivery. Rather than focusing on a single equipment type or discipline, you’ll have visibility across complete generation projects, leading multidisciplinary teams, managing technical risk, and helping move complex infrastructure from design through construction and commissioning. Projects may include new generating units, powerhouse reconstruction, major plant and unit upgrades, dam safety initiatives, and spillway upgrades.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the engineering component of large and technically complex generation projects, managing scope, schedule, cost, quality, and technical risk.

• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams across electrical, mechanical, civil, structural, and other engineering disciplines.

• Act as an Owner’s Engineer Lead, coordinating the review and acceptance of designs completed by external consultants and vendors.

• Develop engineering execution strategies, design/review plans, schedules, and resource requirements.

• Manage technical risks, including integration of new equipment and systems into existing generation facilities.

• Coordinate technical specifications, drawings, design criteria, and engineering deliverables.

• Work closely with Project Management, Construction, Contract Management, Engineering, Quality, and Field Operations.

• Provide engineering support throughout manufacturing, construction, testing, and commissioning.

• Resolve complex technical issues and communicate recommendations to project leadership and senior management.

• Coach and mentor engineers and project team members.

Required Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering, with Electrical or Mechanical preferred.

• Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a P.Eng. with EGBC.

• Minimum 10 years of progressive engineering experience, ideally involving hydroelectric generation, dams, power generation, or comparable major infrastructure.

• Minimum 4 years leading or coordinating multidisciplinary engineering/design teams on medium to large projects.

• Strong understanding of engineering project delivery, including scope, schedule, cost, risk, and system integration.

• Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and technical problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience

• Full project lifecycle experience from conceptual design through construction, testing, and commissioning.

• Hydroelectric generating stations, dams, substations, or other major power/heavy industrial facilities.

• Owner’s Engineer experience or oversight of external engineering consultants and vendors.

• Site experience on large construction projects.

• Electric utility engineering and project delivery experience.

Additional Requirements

• Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.

• Ability to work from the Burnaby office at least 3 days per week.

• Willingness to travel to facilities throughout BC and occasionally elsewhere in North America or internationally.
